Arabic GCSE, AS and A Level Study Day 2024

Join us for our Arabic GCSE, AS and A Level Study Day, a fun and interactive way to engage students in the Arabic language outside of the classroom!

This session will be led by Dr. Salwa Mohamed, co-coordinator of the Institution Wide Language Programme (IWLP) at Manchester Metropolitan University and senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Salwa has MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics.

The day will include an introduction from Salwa, providing contextual information and key words. This will be followed by a screening of Capernaum helping learners explore a range of topics related to Arabic language and culture. Salwa will lead a series of exercises exploring themes and topics covered on the Arabic GCSE, AS and A Level syllabus.

Screening: Capernaum
Dir Nadien Labaki / Lebanon 2018
126 mins / Arabic and Amharic with English subtitles

Capernaum tells the story of a young and brave Zain, a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life while serving a five-year sentence for a violent crime.

The film explores how Zain got to this place, as we see him journey from gutsy, streetwise child to hardened 12-year-old “adult” fleeing his negligent parents and surviving through his wits on the streets where he meets people along the way and finds himself in unexpected situations.

Capernaum is a recent film about young people and the experience of the criminal justice system in Lebanon. The film is touching, emotional, and personal. Salwa will contextualise the film and explore the themes of history, poverty and injustice.
